Water was 30C, high pressure and a heatwave so not the best conditions. The sturgeon were an absolute pain, lost count of how many we caught up to 30lbs 8 oz, absolutely insufferable things! My son, James, had a nice common fishing from the second cabin, 21.08, and a small catfish of about 10lbs. I started off fishing the main cabin, but only caught sturgeon after sturgeon, and neither of us liked the floating platforms you have to fish from in those two cabins. On the third day we moved down the other end of the lake to fish from the third cabin, situated on a beach, so much better fishing from dry land. Almost immediately James had a hard-fighting grass carp on fake corn from the right-hand margin, 35lbs, followed by another shortly afterwards of 33.08. After, yes, you’ve guessed it, more sturgeon, I caught what I came for at 8.30 pm from the left-hand margin, having put a hopper of boils and pellets out via the bait boat – a fin and scale perfect common of 40lbs 2 oz – result! With James’s brace of 30+ grasses and my 40, given what a absolute pain the sturgeon were, and because five nights on a bed chair was causing me problems (I have spinal stenosis and am awaiting surgery), we decided to end the session the following day, two days early and travelled north, back towards Calais, staying two nights in a hotel in Le Touquet and visiting a number of Second World War related sites – so we had the best of both worlds.
The lake itself is very established, very quiet, peaceful and secure. The main cabin has full amenities and all three cabins have good wi-fi, nothing not to like. The city of Troyes is only a 20 minute drive away so getting supplies is no problem.
In sum I would say that this is not predominantly a carp lake but a mixed fishery, and I never want to see another sturgeon ever again!!
