My first fishing trip to France took me and my 12-year-old son to Barberet Lakes near Rennes in France, where we had the whole of Lake Bluu to ourselves for the week, creating a relaxed atmosphere where we could enjoy every minute together. the venue is run by Dave and Verity, who recently moved over from England, and they couldn’t have made us feel more welcome. Every morning started with a fantastic full English breakfast, and every evening we were treated to a delicious 2 course meal delivered to the swim. They even went out of their way to cater for my son’s picky eating. Which was greatly appreciated. The fishing was incredible from the start. During the first 24 hours alone, we landed 8 fish, including several double takes. We decided to share the rods throughout the week so we both had an equal chance of catching, and it made the whole experience something we enjoyed together, rather than competing against each other. The catfish were the stars early on. My son landed an incredible 57-pound catfish, setting a new personal best and even beating mine which I increased to 55lb. much to his delight. We continued catching fish every day, finishing the week with 24 fish between us. Towards the end of the trip, we also started catching carp, including surface caught fish on bread and dog biscuits, which added another exciting challenge. Seeing carp confidently taking bait from the surface and managing to catch one that way was a real highlight. We even had time to enjoy some of the other facilities, including a swimming pool to cool off. and some safe air rifle shooting that Dave set up. More than anything, this trip was about sharing an unforgettable week with my son, watching him catch his biggest fish ever, seeing his confidence grow, and enjoying every moment together, made for a holiday we’ll both remember for a very long time. I’d rate it5 out of 5. Fantastic hosts, excellent food and non-stop action. I’d love to go back.
