Lake Meillant is situated in Central France near the village of Meillant just over 4 hours drive from the port of Caen. It is approximately 20 acres in size and is set in the country estate of Chateaux Meillant, surround by mature woodland. From the road it is around half a mile down a stone track. It can accommodate up to a maximum of 6 anglers and can be booked on an excusive basis or on a per angler basis. Arrival is 3pm on the Saturday and departure is no later than 11am the following Saturday.

The lake is surrounded by mature trees and shrubs with swims made with ample room for a bivvy. The lake shaped is best described as ‘blunt Y’ shape. The bottom of the ‘Y’ is the deepest part of the lake with depths from 12 to 18 feet at the dam end. The middle section of the lake ranges in depth from 10 to 12 foot. The right arm of the lake is the shallowest part of the lake and great fun can be had battling with one of the resident carp in this part of the lake. The left arm runs into a pool of about 4 acres in size where the stream enters the lake.

There is a good head of both common and mirror carp with the largest current fish just below 60lbs at 58lb 5oz. As well as a few 50s, there’s plenty of back up 40s, 30s and 20s to ensure the rods aren’t static for long. In addition grass carp and Wels catfish have been stocked. Silver fish have been removed from the lake.

  • Carp to 58lb 50z – surely they’ll be a 60lb plus soon!
  • Several fish over 50lb
  • A good stock of 40lb plus mirrors and commons
  • Plenty of 20lb and 30lb fish
  • 20 to 30 grass carp
  • Wels catfish, which are estimated to be up to 135lb when landed!

To keep an air of anticipation, excitement and mystery about the lake there will not be anyone to great you when you arrive, no one to tell you where to cast, where not to cast and what you can and can’t do.

At the dam end of the lake is a wooden cabin which can be used to store angler’s equipment and also comes in handy on a rainy day.

There is also a toilet but as there is no mains water on the site, a bucket of lake water is required after use. It’s a system that seems to work well!

There is not a long list of rules for Lake Meillient. The owners ask that you treat the lake and the fish as you would expect the previous anglers of the lake to have treated it before your stay.
