Situated 430 miles south of Calais in the Charente region (the second most sunniest part of France), Heron lake at Puyravaud can be traced back to as early as 1768. The lake is stream fed and situated in private grounds meaning no licences are required and night fishing is permitted. It’s considered to be a runs water and when the fish are feeding you can be assured of plenty of action! In fact it was recently featured in Sky’s carp programme, Pursuit.

There’s 150 carp between 20 to 55lbs with the average fish size as of May 2017 being 32lbs. If you would rather a specimen water the have a look at Kingerfisher lake at Puyravaud Carp.

Heron lake is 6.75 acres in size and in 2007 the lake owners drained the lake, removed the silt build up, rebuilt dam walls and reinforced the lake banks where it had been eroded over the years.

The prices for the barn and exclusive use of Heron lake are below:

£1,350 Jan/Feb/Mar/Nov/Dec

£1,550 April and May

£1,750 June/Sept/Oct

£1,975 July & Aug

For larger parties the barn can be booked as well as a neighbouring cottage which is within the same private grounds.

There are six purposely created swims spread around lake ensuring each angler has good water coverage and privacy.

The Swims

Ye Olde Oak Corner

This swim is at the end of the lake. It’s close to the dam wall and is the deepest section of the lake with depths raging from 5ft to 15ft. Casting can be a bit tricky but you are able to walk along the bank to cast or drop your rig with pinpoint accuracy and walk the rod back to swim.

Gaz & Geeza’s

Can accommodate two anglers and the swim gives you access to the widest part of the lake. Many anglers choose to fish the near margin or cast to the far side where carp are often seen basking in the sun. The lake depth in this swim ranges between 4 to 7 feet.

Edgar’s Haunt

Situated roughly half way along the house bank side opposite what the owners have termed ‘the island’ where an abundance of wildlife can be enjoyed. The opposite bank tends to be a very productive area to fish from this swim. Lake depths between 4 to 6 feet.

The Reeds

Aptly named ‘The Reeds’ it is opposite a small section of reeds on the far bank. This is a more private swim at the narrow end of the lake. The opposite bank is, as a result, within easy casting distance and can be a productive area. Lake depths are between 3 and 5 feet.

The Shallows

Situated close to one of the two fresh water feeds into the lake, carp can often be spotted patrolling this area of the lake especially in the warmer weather. Some good fish have been caught from this swim, although it does get fished less often than other swims. Lakes depths are between 3 to 5 feet.

Billy No Mates

This is the only swim on the far side of the lake so you will have the bank to yourself, hence its name! It’s a great swim for stalking carp in the margins, although it is the furthest swim from the house. It has good access the bay area of the lake where the carp like to regularly visit. Lake depths are between 3 to 5 feet.
